Bring On the Slime!
TFK talks to Blake Shelton at the 2016 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards
Green slime flowed in full force on March 12 at the 16th annual Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in Inglewood, California. Blake Shelton, country music superstar and judge on the hit TV show The Voice, hosted the event. TFK caught up with Shelton before the show to get a preview of the big night.
“The idea here is to actually make a mess,” Shelton told TFK. “At any other award show that I’ve hosted or been a part of, everybody was really uptight and took themselves way too seriously,” he explains. “Here it’s about absolute chaos: having fun, making a mess, and not being afraid to make a fool of yourself. That’s why I’m the perfect host for this thing.”
Before the show, energy was high and shrieks of laughter and excitement could be heard on the orange carpet. Actress Ryan Newman, who plays Emily Hobbs in See Dad Run, talked to TFK before the awards. “I’m excited to be here because it’s just such a fun event,” she told TFK. “With all the kids [here], it’s just great energy.”
A Playful Show
Early in the show, comedian Ellen DeGeneres used her phone on stage to Snapchat audience members Shapchatting her at the same time. Nickelodeon Game Shakers stars Cree Cicchino and Madisyn Shipman leaped across the stage in a live action performance of Super Mario Bros.
Some big winners included Hotel Transylvania 2 for Favorite Animated Movie and Star Wars: The Force Awakens for Best Movie. Actress Amy Poehler won Favorite Voice From an Animated Movie for her role as Joy in Inside Out. Zendaya won Favorite Female T.V. Star for her role in K.C. Undercover. “I’ve been doing this for a long time. I’ve been doing it for you guys,”
Zendaya told the crowd after her win. “Making positive programming for young people is so important to me and I will keep doing it.”
Kids Weigh In
This year, kids were able to participate in live interactive voting throughout the show on the Nickelodeon website. Viewers at home voted to slime Internet personality Cameron Dallas. Viewers also decided to prank DNCE with a toilet paper blaster just before they went on stage to perform. Other performances included Rapper Silento singing his hit song “Watch Me,” Charlie Puth and Wiz Khalifa performed as well, and won the Best Collaboration award for “See You Again”.
Marvel superhero stars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans took to the stage to thumb wrestle and promote their upcoming movie, Captain America: Civil War. The audience was also treated to movie clips of the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and The Angry Birds Movie.
Members of the female pop band Fifth Harmony were slimed on stage while accepting their award for Best Music Group. Justin Bieber won Favorite Male Singer and Ariana Grande won Favorite Female Singer. Adele was awarded Favorite Song of the Year for “Hello.” Celebrities Sofia Vergara, Will Ferrell, Ross Lynch, and Jennifer Lawrence also took home blimp awards.
